I think using positive reinforcement and negative punishment until you can’t would still be considered LIMA, if he means: I was using food or pay reward to get some obedience out of the dog. Then the dog would rather take the negative punishment to chase the squirrel so as the trainer i will Have to apply some form of negative reinforcement or positive punishment instead ( i have had this happen in protection training where the dog was willing to take a punishment to get that 2-3 second bite). So if i could accomplish training the dog with out using any aversive methods i think it would still technically be LIMA . However I think it’s much more beneficial to teach the dog some form of punishment vs a dog that doesn’t even know what punishment is. Teaches them to make wise choices in life because there’s a thought process “Oh this could be bad”. I don’t know, just a thought. just setting the dog up for success in the future by getting them understanding what a punishment is would be far more rewarding long term. Life is not unicorns and rainbows, so there will always be a need for punishment to some degree.
