How to Tackle Skunk Spray

If your dog gets sprayed by a skunk:

Don't panic!
Don't touch your dog's fur with your bare hands
Don't wait around for the smell to air out
If possible, wash your dog outside or in a ventilated area indoors

 

Best Recipe for Removing Skunk Spray:
(For a 30-50lb dog)
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 tsp Liquid Dish Washing Soap

Alternative Mixture:
2 parts water
1 part apple cider vinegar

 

Bathing Instructions:

  1. Put on gloves
  2. Wash your dog's eyes out with cold water if eyes were affected
  3. Prepare mixture immediately before use (should not be stored)
  4. Work the mixture through your dog's fur and rinse. Don't leave in for long
  5. Repeat washing with the peroxide mixture or use a regular dog shampoo if the skunk spray oils, have been adequately removed
  6. Towel dry

Add 1/2 cup baking soda to Laundry detergent to wash your clothes
