Yes, they happen simultaneously. I put the remote in my loop or anchor hand. The phase 2 collar can mask the ecollar if the pumping or direction is not light, but the dogs are capable of noticing both of the handler is doing proper leash pumps. At this point in the training, the leash is used as very light help. If the dog understands the verbal command then the command is also helpful. So by repeating the command, with the nick, and light leash guidance, fading off of help with the leash usually happens very quickly. This also clarifies to the dog that each time you have to repeat the command in p3 there is a nick….as opposed to p2 constant pumps (even between the commands).

To expedite generalization I usually start with commands that have minimal requirements, like leave it, this way, or recall. This helps the dog grasp the concept of the ecollar and generalize in the more complex commands with ease. When possible I do all the commands that bring the dog in first; this way, recall, heel, and then we do the commands where the dog would need to be away; sit, down, wait, bed. Sometimes this isn’t possible based on client needs but when it is possible it helps the client and the dog move along smoothly and therefore quickly.
