I would suggest backing up and teaching him in true phase 1, when he fully understands the expectations, then add corrections. He did seem to fill in the gaps, but I find its beneficial as an instructor to go through phases 1 – 4 without skipping steps. Mike has a good instructional video on here for starting “Leave It”. It may also help to use an easier “target” than the food bowl so its easy for him to “leave it”.
