I don’t encourage a client to make a safety decision as if they have 100% control of any living creature. Too many things can happen that are out of my/their control that can have an effect on the animal. We do our best to proof their p3 and of leash control in as many crazy scenarios as possible but I coach people to have situational awareness and to default to positive control of their dogs to reduce risk. My clients are pretty dedicated because they are mostly aggression cases, but everyone stands the risk of complacent handling, especially as things get better and problems get solved. Impulse control is a perishable skill, so I error on the side of what sets the dog up for safety and success, regardless of the teams prior successes. What ever they decide to do after that coaching is up to them. I love going off leash and so do my clients so I try to make responsible decision making part of the curriculum.
