I agree with Allie about paying attention as a “compulsion.” Some dogs just don’t need as much attention as we would like and obedience training alone during the day is enough attention for them.
As for plans, building a good relationship and spending time with this dog I would focus on play. In addition to fetch, is it also possible to play tug-of-war safely with this dog? Play can help stabilize the relationship and if we play with the dog in the right way (we let him “win” sometimes, sometimes we win, etc…) we build trust, besides, what’s fun about playing a game where we always lose, right? Play also helps to move us into a leadership position with the idea – start the play, control the play, interrupt the play from time to time, determine how long the play lasts and end the play.
