Without doing the course to this point, the best way to understand it is to reference it as a “Signaled Omission CONDITIONED Punishment Conditioning” expanding upon Wood’s Taxonomy since operant conditioning as we know is very vague. I highlighted the CONDITIONED because Wood’s doesn’t distinguish between conditioned and unconditioned consequences, which would make it an even better taxonomy to quickly explain what each signal we give the dogs serves in the training process.

The dog is already either in command and breaking before the required duration or failed to do the behavior after the initial cue.

So, the conditioned punishers are various movements referenced in the phase 2 videos for heel..

    – a slow movement for forging

    – a fast movement for lagging

    – a side step to opposite sides for going wide or crossing behind the back

So dog has cue to “heel” and their is an omission of the desired behavior from the dog, the handler can make a slight movement (or verbal “no”) to save the the dog an unconditioned punishment. Honest mistakes are so common for dogs getting slightly out of position this is huge confidence builder for the dog and trust builder.
