    Without formal training it would be likely a dog may anticipate the impending aggression and go to a bite earlier than before.  That is exactly why formal control training is a good idea for any capable dog even if it is not technically protection trained.  Dogs can make bad judgements or be in a situation that the owner knows the dog may misinterpret beforehand, so training gives the owner the ability to clearly communicate and either tell the dog this is a non-aggressive situation or to tell the dog to do something different in the meantime such as lie down.
