First I would make sure the handler is a leash ninja, has an understanding of EO. and that the puppy has the right gear, can wear it for play etc, and is comfy following the owner around for cookies. I like having them do as much off leash phase 1 bonding and leadership and management as possible.

I love using the “bed”command to teach dogs who are brand new to leash handling about leash pumps, but that is just what I find is easiest for people and the dogs, due to the visual aid the bed provides. Before this they need to learn phase 1 bed and fade off the prompts. If there is a rush for leash use, I use phase 1 “this way” to start the communication and then move into p2.
