id like to get my dog started (or just evaluated) in PP training. but ive searched a lot on the internet and i just cant find anyone who does what mike and earl do. these guys are the only people ive ever seen who train for the reality of a situation that would require a dog to protect. i see Schutzhund vs. PP the same as i see Tae Kwon Do vs. mixed martial arts. one incorporates fancy moves that look cool and you win prizes for scoring points, and the other is real world fighting. Period.

everyone around here (california) either does law enforcement training or schutzhund. I DONT WANT EITHER ONE! and i dont even want my dog evaluated by a trainer who does LE or schutzhund stuff because they will either tell me that my dog doesnt have what it takes (wont score points for appearance or some other BS), or they will tell me that she would be great just because they want my money.

i wish i could just go work with mike and earl….or the next best thing would be to have someone on the west coast who has the same mind set, training experience and who uses the foundation system.

Mike or Earl, have you guys found any trainers here in california that you would even think to recommend to me?

    thanks, you guys are awesome,
    Jeremy

    okay thanks mike.

and yes, regardless of whether i give the treat or not, i ALWAYS praise them for doing good. i say “good girl” or “good girls” all day long! i’ve actually begun to talk to my kids in the same tone when they do something positive. kinda weird.

even though they are house broken, every time they pee or poo and i’m outside to see it (or when they sit by the door to let me know they need out to relieve themselves), they get lots of praise. when they are getting into something they shouldn’t be and i tell them no….i praise right when the respond to my NO command. every time they come to me when i call…..i praise (because i want them to follow commands when there are distractions like when the start to chase the cat back across the street. which they stop at the sidewalk about 90 percent of the time).

they don’t get food, water, treats, toys, get to come inside or go outside without doing a simple command first (usually sit, or sit and down). then they get praise along with the reward of whatever i am giving them. they are great dogs and they love to please.

the only downside with having two dogs, is it’s impossible to play fetch. every time the one with the ball should be bringing it back to me, the other dog disrupts the return and i never get the ball back. and, it is very difficult (impossible) to get them to walk well on the leash together (one dog per person). if the other dog, or even kids are in front of them….they pull. so i have to take them out individually to play fetch and go for a proper walk, or to work on the Heel (i use Foos. i don’t like the term heel cause everyone who thinks they’ve trained their dog so well and try to show off by making them heel. so they end up looking dumb saying heel a bunch of times with absolutely no response from the dog. “My brother”)

    anyway, thanks again mike,
    Jeremy

Beautiful pups by the way! Works out great if you are a hunter and feed raw!

That WOULD be funny. Thanks for the complements on the dogs. They are great and so so fun. Now i know all dogs are good dogs with the right owners, but with what I’ve learned from you guys, me and my family spending time with my dogs teach them their place in the the family (basically they get to enter the home after us etc..), and them being so smart, it is just a great experience being a new dog owner (did i mention im still overcoming my K9 allergies to have dogs?)

I obviously work with my dogs during training sessions, but i think there is so much to be said for spending as much time with them during daily life. They learn pretty much all day long. they spend about 60 percent of their time with us, whether it’s inside the house or taking them out running errands (when practical) which I think is a great way to do “obedience maintenance” (and build their trust).

i do plan on feeding eggs and yogurt etc…

do you ever give any fruits or veggies? i figure since wild dogs would get every bit out of a kill (or something they came across that’s already dead), they would end up getting some of the stomach contents, so im thinking about giving them a small percentage of some veggies (probably not fruit) like sweet potatos and carrots.

ha ha, now i regret tossing a lot of elk i had in my fridge. just took up too much space. and my wife didnt like it. except for the ground elk that make great tacos, spaghetti and anything else youd use ground beef for. its so lean that they add a little bit of beef to give it just a little fat….

i dont like venison that much myself, but im sure the pups would!

im also thinking about maybe giving them some coyote some time. i just dont know if i trust it without having someone process it for me (i dont know all what they do). Yotes carry all kinds of stuff i wouldnt want my dog to have. But i would imagine freezing for the proper length of time would kill most parasites and other bad stuff….

plus it would just weird me out knowing that im feeding my dog a dog. kinda creepy.

I kinda figured that the bones would become dehydrated when cooked and change the way they break apart. Thanks for the info.

I think i will grind up any bird meat that has lots of small bones just to be on the safe side.

I did record some video of my dogs eating some raw antelope. It’s a quick meal since they are eating boneless meat that i cut into about one inch cubes. So its not like watching a dog eat a t bone steak or lamb shoulder. But it’s cool to see how much they love it. They dont eat it as ravenously as they did in the morning, but it does get wolfed down!

well, today i tried to see how they liked raw. i gave both dogs about a half pound of cubed antelope sirloin steak that was slightly defrosted in the microwave.

it was gone in less than 15 seconds. they absolutely devoured it. i felt bad that i was gone so fast and they really wanted more, but i want to try the “2 percent of their body weight per day” rule to see how they do on it.

I’ll keep ya’ll posted on the progress. and I’ll probably post some videos of them eating too.

well ever since i posted that question last night about trying raw fat, ive been web searching a lot about people who feed raw. it seems to me like it just may be the best way to know without a doubt what i would be feeding my dogs. And thats what dogs have been eating for thousands of years right?

i have seen everything from people that just give them chicken legs, breasts, thighs (bone in), steaks, lamb, beef heart, to others who mix up a whole variety with fruits, veggies and meat all blended up in a processor.

I am seriously thinking about digging deeper into raw and giving it a try. i dont like trying to decipher all the mumbo jumbo on packages that im my opinion may not be true anyway. does anyone even do quality control on dog food like the FDA does for humans? I assume that it’s just like health supplements…..COMPLETELY UNREGULATED (until something that everyone gets at GNC and it starts killing people left and right).

One question though….I’ve been told by many dog owners that dogs CANNOT EVER EAT CHICKEN BONES OR THEY WILL CHOKE AND DIE!!!!! but from lots of videos, that doesnt seem to be the case, right?

    oh, another question.

i dont feed my dogs anything but their food (no table scraps or other people food), but since the chicken fat is desired in our dogs diet, is it okay to feed my dogs fat that i normally throw away after i trim it off of my chicken, pork, red meats etc? and if they can eat it, should it be boiled or otherwise cooked or given raw???

    Thanks again,
    Jeremy

okay. let me get back in this.

How about this one (seems ive been striking out so far).

AvoDerm Chicken meal and brown rice

Chicken Meal, Ground Whole Brown Rice, Ground Rice, Oatmeal, Salmon Meal, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Rice Bran, Tomato Meal, Flax Seed, Chicken Cartilage (Natural Source of Chondroitin Sulfate & Glucosamine), Natural Flavor, Dried Alfalfa Meal, Dried Whole Egg, Dried Brewers Yeast, Dried Kelp Meal, Avocado Meal, Avocado Oil, Dried Whey,

i dont want to seem like a cheap ass, but i just cant afford to feed my dogs food that costs 60 dollars for a 28 pound bag…..but on the same token, i want to give them food that gives them the nutrition they need.

    thanks,
    Jeremy

oh, and by the way. charlotte is an awesome dog. just awesome….
