Have you had a change to go through the the 5.0 leaderships and ethology streams? They would be be good to cross reference with the Dominance aggression blueprint in regard to this behavior. Dom aggression is a result of real or perceived conflict, so going over a leadership and management plan would be really helpful especially if the owners intend to use advanced training tools.

If we practice leadership and dominance we can prevent leadership and dominance conflicts thereby preventing aggression. https://dogtraining.world/knowledge-base/classification-canine-aggression-rehab-k9-1/

Ooooo good challenge for the look command! I’m gonna do that with Storm!!!!!!!
I like to keep the dogs and handlers focused on the task at hand, which is why I just have the handler’s revert to phase 1 and getting the dog through the command….and then carrying on with the escape conditioning. I feel like it also creates a sense of assistance and help and working through the discomfort and perceived conflict, to complete a task. It also helps coach the clients on how to utilize command structure to its full potential. This is just my experience, lots of dogs chomp on the leash in the beginning because it has not been a source of predictability and good things but that can definitely change with foundation style.

I like to use p2 bed escape conditioning for teaching leash pumps to dogs and handlers that are undoing damage from prior or unpredictable handling. It helps having a visual aid, for both parties, and is a command with pretty obvious and easily attainable expectations. After wards we add phase 2 “this way” so it forces the handler to be accountable for a commutative command instead of just pumping and using the leash to “maneuver” the dog. These drills really help the handler become accountable for their proficiency and the dog learns that the handler is predictable and that they are the operator in operant conditioning. Of course, all of this preceded by leadership, leash ninja drills on inanimate objects (or other handlers), and plenty of phase 1. Here is an example of bed/this way with a dominance conflict case. Hunter is mid escape conditioning for both commands, but you can get the idea. The handler can also do much more to be helpful, showing the dog how to escape the correction as quickly as possible, pairing corrections with cookies and more prompting. Going from bed to bed has its benefits for limiting the amount of time there is not clear communication between handler and dog. If the dog gets chompy during this drill, I have my clients just start command structure: over name, command, name command, and prompt the dog into the desired behavior. Starting command structure over is like “clutch in, brake in”….. start over.

Thank you for sharing your story and your encouraging words! I understand how hard it is to go through undoing harmful training, and your dogs are super blessed to have a momma who is willing to go through the work for them. I would love to see pics of your Rottie (my fav) and your girl doing bite work!!! This class was designed to give advanced and “finished” dogs an opportunity to face high pressure triggers with the safety of a bite suit, so that their handlers could practice cool, calm, handling without worrying. I wish these guys were down for bite club, but it’s not for everyone…..we definitely don’t want the agitator to pet the dogs….I was kind of hoping the bite suit would add pressure…but the dogs did so great! I don’t encourage my clients to let strangers touch their dogs (I am really big on handlers advocating for their dogs) BUTTTTT Pepper is really social and snuggly when she is not afraid. I think they are all are so used to my yard and the schooling presentation that they felt comfy, went into work mode, and she associated class time will all good things.

It is very important to me to represent ethical training and standards of education….now that I know about them!! If it were me, I would ask to cancel my membership and have my name removed, and if they keep the money…..consider it a donation towards a lesson personally learned. If they ask why, I think a simple “I am changing career paths” is what I would say. I agree with Cyndi, in that I want to shout from the rooftops what I am learning and get everybody on board…. I do shout from the rooftops…..not everybody is on board lol….but I can sleep at night and I know that with every dog that I meet, I have the opportunity to make amends and be accountable for the way that I behaved around animals in my past. It is a profound thing to learn about, and embrace, a new way of doing things! Good for you!

I include the leash within the price of the training package. I have some people that also, get to where they want to be and then fizzle out….my aggression cases are the ones that mostly stick around…or people like @JoseC who see the value in continuing to practice. Most people come to at least a couple group classes during the robust portion of their training process. I have a demo dog group that I text for support with new dogs. My average client stays with me for 6 months to a year being active with in person training, and then are allowed to come to social classes for the lifetime of the dog as long as they come regularly enough. I really try to make the training fun, especially because people are so used to it NOT being fun…..though I am pretty strict…😆 Sounds like you are moving pretty close by, there is no shortage of dogs!

MemberJanuary 25, 2023 at 10:50 am in reply to: Nerdy Dog Training Moment of Gratitude!I have not heard this before, I was under the impression that I was teaching it the way that was most LIMA and up to date with the 4.0. I am confused about this and how this wouldn’t cause more corrections with an ecollar if the dog is under the impression that sometimes they may only get a leash pump. The handler would have to be super aware of competing motivators and I remember avoidance conditioning being very specific about consistency of motivations. I like the idea of freeing up a hand, but thought that was the end goal of avoidance conditioning being done properly.
