Totally agree with Art, maybe a bit more of Stormy’s story? From my own experience dogs are best teachers. When I took Vena I thought I know everything 😆 Let’s say she very quickly proofed that I know nothing about dogs! Yep leadership is big part of understanding dogs. And I think more dog is closed to origins more needs that.

Wow! They are not afraid of Lexi at all! I wander how the relationship between them and Lexi will develop in the future. At the moment they are very curious 😀 Also once they mature I guess nobody will be able to come in to your yard. In this terms geese are better than dogs!

Yeah…. Funny is that, I guess that all was recorded by parents or relatives of those kids…. 😬 I really wonder what is in peoples heads? The same people normally would say- oh he knows (dog) that they are just children…

Very interesting article Arthur! We are dealing with a lot highly inbred dogs everyday. It’s worth to know how inbred can affect them. What inbred generally does is lowering amount of genes in the population. Why pure breed dogs are inbred? Because we want them to look the same, behave the same. This why you should almost be guaranteed when you buy dog of certain breed that it will show certain behaviors.

    That is the theory 🙃

In real life inbred mean- dogs more prone to health issues (faulty genes, no healthy copies in the population), like for ex OCD in article and other genetic diseases. Shorter life span, less energetic, much quicker ageing dogs.

Before we all run to buy cocka-poos 😆, currently most of breeders is trying to make sure that inbred level is not to high. My own dogs have 6,8 and 2,5. And they healthy and happy animals.

Totally love your videos and description of exercise! With luring I would probably add also that we will use it in the future for teaching dogs different positions, by luring them into.

From my experience if you only tell people that dog mean to follow your hand; they will quickly give up on that exercise as for generic dog owner is useless (just in them opinion of course 🙃).

Maybe it’s Northern Ireland, but here if I didn’t explained why we do something they were skipping it as not important 😩

Such a nice session, Stormy is working with such a lightness and it’s clearly a fun for her to be working with you Allie!

I don’t have good videos, only have been on three trainings so far. I would have to get some sort of body cam.

Here, we let dogs search on them own pace and cut the corners if they want to, in mantrailing we believe that we can’t determined where the scent went so we can’t punish the dog for following it. We are allowed to reward the dog during the search and they can take a time if they need to.

Those rules which you mentioned are applying here to tracking. I never done it as my older dog Alaskan Malamute Vena had no interest in such an activities 😆 With my youngest Yakutian Laika Pixel I went straight to mantrailing. We have been trained by Mantrailing Global (very new company on the market 😉).

I totally agree that this will not ”fix” the dogs even if some trainers think so, but it give good outlet for them drives. I’m training obedience with Pixel, mantrailing it’s a bit of play for us and relax 🙃

Nice one! In UK at the moment we have mantrailing. It’s getting more and more popular at the moment. Quite often recommended by dog trainers for reactive, fearful and aggressive dogs. The biggest difference to search and rescue is that dog is working on the long line.

They are also looking for a strangers which reward them with food without touching and even looking if they require such a handling.

Me and Pixel done training in basics and we may even work towards level one assignment.

Apparently when level 4 is equal to search and rescue 😉

Sometimes people also choose do not know, it’s just easier 😉 With the knowledge they would have to do something- make some action.

Interesting study, what I can see also they not just can’t recognise but also trying to explain the dog- for ex. he got scared, she didn’t noticed…. and then- oh she was so apologetic- licked my hand- she isn’t going to do that again. Almost like the owners getting into Stockholm syndrome.

Very difficult case! I looked at your PDF and have to say it’s looking very familiar for me. I used to was working very similar way… There is a one problem especially with watch me exercise. Imagine that you are afraid of spiders. And there is one very nasty crawling up to you. There is someone beside you who tells you- don’t worry about that- just watch me, I have control. You know that spider is there and still crawling…

In my experience- I never was able to execute reliable watch me. I started to work slightly different way, instead of trying get dog to watch me, I was letting dog have a look at the ‘thing’- what ever that was and then reward it for getting eyes off. If you work also with distance at some time you will achieve effect of dog glancing at the problem dog/ person etc and then turning back to you, once you have that you can suggest what you and dog should do- for ex walk away, go to bed etc. Another part of that exercise is teaching dog give up stuff to receive something better from person training it. You start from simple stuff, trow treat when dog is on the lead, block the lead once dog is looking at you; offer something more desirable. You work up from things mean nothing to dog to stuff very desirable. We were calling that ‘resignation’. It’s good also to teach dog to switch between food and toys reward in training.

Those exercise won’t fix territorial aggression problem, but can give you little something to boost heelers skills.

    Good luck!

I like especially point 4. No need to focus on the past, when we have future to come. Most of our clients is looking for solution of problem which will help them to enjoy life with dog, not chat about what went wrong in the past.
