What is marking?

A simple way of saying that you are using a conditioned reinforcer or secondary reinforcer.

Charge the Marker vs Skipping the Charge?

Marker --> Reward until the dog shows an emotional response on only the marker.

Why "charge" a marker?

  • dogs with limited human interaction
  • changing the chosen marker

Do we NEED to charge the marker?

What is prompting?

ANYTHING that you do to encourage the dog to perform the behavior you want to mark.

What is Luring?

A TYPE of prompt by having the dog follow something.

What is Shaping?

Reinforcing successive approximations of the goal behavior

  • Can be used with luring
  • Can be used without luring "free shaping"

When can we mark off our "marking" checkbox?

When the dog can consistently be prompted to do the complete behavior.


What is next?

Fading off the prompt. We need the dog to do the behavior with a chosen final cue/signal/command without any prompting.
