AVSAB Position Statement On Puppy Socialization

Position statement on vaccination and socialization by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior 2019

Conclusions:

  • Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age.
  • A dog's first 3 months are the most critical for socialization.
  • Puppies can start puppy class as early as 7-8 weeks, provided that they have had at least one set of vaccines, at least a week before the start of class.
