You can use a regular buckle collar for phase 1 training, but they are next to useless for training any type of phase 2 training.  All the pressure hits one part of the dogs neck and this can be damaging to the dog’s trachea.  You would also need to use so much force for the dog to care bout any type of leash correction that it will display as aggressive behavior to the dog which is never good.  It is better to use a collar that is safer and uses less force to get same motivation.
