To piggy back off of this, I use a dense reward schedule for any dog during the learning process, regardless of age. Most clients are concerned with stopping unwanted behaviors so getting them in the habit of rewarding desired behaviors reliably is usually something that needs to be hammered in. There are sometimes safety reasons that create caveats….but I don’t usually thin out primary rewards too much until we can begin to replace them with freedom as a Premack reward. There are always reasons for nuance, but I have never had an issue with a client over rewarding their dog.
