I watched the “using a positive marker” video and I’m a little bit confused. Are you wanting the dog to look at you when you say their name or come to you when you say their name? Are you trying to shape a behavior around the dogs name or are you trying to Create an association with the food reward?

I have found that teaching the dog to look or come to you on the name eventually requires that you fade off of that….or “un-train it” as it causes them to break commands because now they think that when they hear their name, they should adjust to look at you or come towards you. So when I teach marking a behavior, I have the clients say the dogs name give them a command and then mark the fulfillment of that command by the dog. I just go right into p1 command structure. This helps create a temporal response from the dog when they hear their name instead of a physical response and minimizes breaking.

If you are doing a charge the marker, then the conditioned response would simply be around the mark not the animals name. So I would just say good boy and then hand him a cookie. And do this until saying good boy results in him looking for the reward or licking his chops, wagging tail etc.
