Allie I look forward to seeing your videos with Vetra on the scent work!
The session just right, the dog did not lose interest. The first time we practiced in conjunction with the command “place” (one my mistake with mark that position :P), she caught what the command “truf truf’ is all about – she is supposed to look for the scent. This time a lesson easier to consolidate the skills learned – 5 containers of which only 1 with the target scent, the rest empty. KJ lays down and sometimes scratches at the container when he hears the marker. I required the nose to be right next to the holes in the container. KJ also started marking the correct container by herself at some point by lying down and scratching at the correct one (what I want from her as final “mark”). She didn’t mark the wrong one once, she only looked at me once with the thought that she might get a reward by being by the wrong container. It seems to me that we should continue to work on marking the correct container with her nose, and only then focus on adding some behavior – it would make sense for the dog to sniff at the scent and only when she is sure to mark, instead of marking incorrect containers. Am I thinking correctly, or is it time to also require marking the behavior with lying down and scratching and only then praise and reward? In fact, this is only our 4th session in scent work so as not to overload the dog with obedience, work, socialization, walks, etc…. we practice every couple of days.
