To piggyback off of this, if you are repeating the command and following the command structure mechanics, it means that the dog is out of position and should be receiving a correction. The conditioned punisher is the act of grace that gives the dog a second chance to do the right thing (the “no”) and in heel is part of the footwork.
If you repeat the command, and sometimes the dog gets a correction and sometimes they don’t, it makes the communication unpredictable and can have lots of side effects.
This is phase 2, so it’s not where we apply punishment. It’s where we teach the dog all the rules so we want to be really strict and consistent with our mechanics so that correction shows her what she’s supposed to do when you make pace changes and if you feel that a leash pump is unnecessary, the conditioned punisher can get slipped in.
Instead of repeating heel when you think the dog needs a second chance, you would just do a slow step, or give the dog a couple steps to change paces, but like Jared said if the dog is far enough behind you, they should be able to see you and adjust very quickly.
Hope this makes sense.
