You literally verbalized what was lingering in my head! This is really a step which could be avoided.
First- most of our clients dogs already know them names, unless they think that they are called NO! or Stop that! I think more important to teach them that they need to add command after that name and the fact that name never is command itself. Sometimes I start to just repeat them name over and over again so they start to understand the concept. And of course no telling dog off just using the name too.
How do I thought name to my dogs?
When they tiny calling them when they were fed, when I wanted to play with them etc. For training I use shorter version of them name in Pixel’s case- Pix. In recall situation I repeat his name so it sounds like Pix Pix come 😆
Plus I also have reward signals- different depending on what and were is the reward at that particular moment… Super complicated but… works for competitive obedience.
Anyway, not planning to teach that anytime soon to pet owners.
