It looks like she is definitely trying to do different things in order to expedite receiving the reward. We are just in the beginning stages here so for now what you want to teach her is that leave it means to move away from whatever you’re saying leave it for which in this case is your hand in any fashion. So I would actually mark it sooner and then set up for the next rep. She can’t turn away from you or not look at you (her handler) or your hands because we’ve been using our hands with food in them to lure for behaviors so the dog is used to following our hands so this is the very beginning stage of the leave it command after this, we move to a different drill. I will look through my client videos and see if I can find some other instruction, but the Theresa video is pretty good for the first step… Which is any and all movement away from your hand. Leave it doesn’t mean lay down or sit. It simply means move your nose away from your hand with the treat (even the tiniest bit) so you’ll need to let her know that she’s right a little bit sooner to clear up that confusion. Think of this portion as teaching her the beginning concept of a leave it or off command.
