For this scenario I have clients (I also do with my personal dogs) create a collar command and teach them how to tack up from a neutral position. This way they aren’t reaching for the dog, the dog is “putting on his gear” for a reward. I have videos on my page I can share if you like.
This is something that I always use high value rewards for. Dogs know that when we put gear on them they are vulnerable and that we are going to attempt to physically control them and that’s why there is a big hesitation from a lot of more dominant cases or even just strong temperament dogs, to allow us to gear them up.
