I required KJ to lie down and scratch into the correct container as a marking (she had done this before sometimes naturally, so I just waited for this behavior instead of shaping or chaining it). 5 containers: 1 with target scent, 2 with treats, 2 empty. We changed the training place for the first time (to the kitchen). With only 1 container it took her a while before she lay down and scratched the container, but once she started marking it went well – she couldn’t lay down every time, because she sat very close to the cabinets – in that situation if I didn’t reward her for marking with “sit” she didn’t know what to do. On one container it was going quite well, so I started to add another and here there were problems. Even with 2 containers she marked the wrong container and I had to reward her for just lying down, but a few times she marked lying down + scratching. Again there was the problem of lack of space. After 4 minutes of training she started barking, sitting and laying down while standing in front of me, I had to help her by stirring the containers to get her back to searching again. She also mislabeled a couple of times at 3 containers, but I waited until she lay down and tried to scratch the right container, which she did a couple of times. A bit of interval training. Around the 7th minute she started to incorrectly blindly mark the containers (usually the ones with treats inside), but if she didn’t get the reward after a while she moved on until she found the correct one. Later, with more repetitions, there was also frustration when the dog didn’t get a reward for sitting and scratching the container, I had to mix the containers because she wouldn’t lie down next to the correct container and stopped looking. Around the 10th minute she started to mislabel the containers again, she circled between the wrong containers a couple of times and labeled them sometimes while barking, once again I had to shuffle the containers. I should have finished the training around 10 minutes, I didn’t have a watch and dragged the session too long. Wanting to end on a positive note, I reduced the number of containers to make it easier for the dog and we did a few more repetitions (I also wanted to get rid of the treats from the pockets 🙂 )
