Another session in building dog’s confidence in pointing to the correct container with scent. 1 container with the target scent, 2 with the treats she gets as a reward and 2 empty ones. The command “place” is at the beginning of phase 1, so if she broke it nothing happened. Start with one container to make sure the dog knows what she is looking for. We continue to focus on marking the correct container with the nose and I help with a marker to make sure the dog knows which one she is looking for. I try not to point my body at the scent container. I have tried to introduce a little ratio so that the dog knows that staying by the correct container will result in a reward in the future. At first, I went a little overboard with the amount of praise before the reward (after 3 praises, the dog got the reward) and she started jumping. Later I dense the amount of rewards and she was doing better and stayed for most repetitions at the right container even though she only received praise. On the last repetition she circled between the wrong containers and didn’t mark any once even though there were treats in 2 of them, when she got to the correct one she didn’t manage to mark it by lying down or scratching, but stayed by it for a short while, so I marked it myself with praise and reward so as not to throw her off track.
