Thanks Mike, both my dogs are responding well to the onion chop corrections, even with distractions… it took a bit longer at first but they are quicker to respond now. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks mike i really appreciate these opportunities to pick your brain about dog training. i really think the website is a great idea and I’m picking up a lot of great stuff.

For me the marker really helps me get the timing. I mostly use a verbal marker because like you said you don’t always have the clicker. I use a short high pitched “good” and that releases the dog to get his reward food or prey, and praise for me has always been to maintain engagement and they may be rewarded with food or calm physical affection but they are expected to maintain the behavior. The mark is a release much like I’m seeing you using “Free” i think. So i think it is fairly similar to what I’m learning here.

so just so i know i get it… if you were rewarding the dog for a behavior with a game of tug or fetch lets say would you say Free or good boy/girl? or both?

Thanks again for answering my questions,

    much appreciated,

    Rob

That’s very sensible. I always try to use as little force as possible and I don’t normally have to correct them in obedience because i really try to set them up for success and introduce distractions really slow. I’ll give the onion chops a try next time they need it though, and I have the Dogtra collar as well for the phase 3 stuff. I have another question but i will post that under a different topic. thanks for helping me understand.

That’s a miracle product, that would have saved my dogs and I so much stress. I’ll find a place and order some right away.

    Thanks

That’s ridicules… How is that going to train him to be a good police dog. it was my understanding that a police dog needs to be confident and feel he can overpower his opponent. Not to learn to be submissive to his “target” who is trying to pick him up and slam him.
