As for tolerating the petting when he anticipates a ball throw don’t you think that is ethologically tipical for border collies? On our ranch we have had many many working line boarder collies and if you try to pet them when they are working sheep or cattle they will either tolerate or duck your petting because the competing motivator is so genetically wired into them. With no sheep or cattle they will relish the petting.
