My goal is to do a retrieve after fire. A formal retrieve into heel, paired with trap shooting (clay targets). I want to prove to myself that it can be done without degrading the relationship or treating the dog like a disposable tool. This is not a toy she plays with, but she is playful so I doubt it will matter what toy we use, I think in the end we would have had to work through this one way or another. I’m actually glad she wants to play with it because I can use play as Premack principle when we are out in a place that has squirrels and lizards…..or hunting them can be Premack 😂

Reminds me of this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c5EQMPIkaA

Comfort could be a thing, but barrier frustration from the excitement of going places can cause it too. Does he spend time in a crate any other time? Is he crate trained properly? Some people get a car crate and don’t spend the appropriate time doing crate breaking. A lick sticker might be a reasonable band aid….but I would be interested to know about the crate elsewhere. Also….how’s leadership?
Does he bark on the way to and from?

I love 18 and 19, I also like how your ethical process includes accountability for competence and continued growth. I love it.

MemberJune 7, 2023 at 12:40 pm in reply to: Great Example of Ritualized Aggression-From Wolf ParkThe Wikipedia definition of ritualiazed aggression looks very much like calming signals in canines, or territorial displays. I am just basing my comments off of what I learned from Mech and Schenkl as it helps me keep defining terms simple. There is an article in the leadership group that addresses studies in this exact topic and a major flaw of the study is fluid definitions especially in relation to dominant behavior.

MemberJune 6, 2023 at 4:25 pm in reply to: Great Example of Ritualized Aggression-From Wolf ParkRitualized aggression is a weird term to me as aggression is (from what I understand) mostly a result of conflict (real or perceived), usually we see submissive behaviors indicating the subordinate animals, rather dominance displays. Dominance is meant to reduce conflict. I have seen the video you are referring to, very interesting. There is something to be said for captivity causing problems….kind of like people having sexually mature dogs with no leadership…..

I have experienced similar issues and doing some in house crate training and spending time in the crate regularly is helpful. A lick sticker attaches to side of the crate and can have almond butter or the like smeared on it.
