I don’t usually recommend adding moisture to their paws, it can exacerbate splitting and bruising. I usually address this through diet and have people get their dog’s boots, if they have current splitting and bruising. This brand is easier to put and keep on for dogs who don’t want their paws touched, also muzzling before trying to put these on is recommended. https://walkeepaws.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAiJSeBhCCARIsAHnAzT-jx20odOpTzSCb_fM3hgvt0Xf8qMir8k-eOyH_uWz_dEyA3FWZd8waAt47EALw_wcB

He was def unsure, but I felt ok about it because I can intervene for him so he doesn’t have to self advocate, by recalling him etc….HOWEVER I just had an event today that is going to change everything. I think I am too liberal and “playful” in my choices. I had some handler redirection from a Mali today, during tug….I’m going to write it up and share in the leadership group because I think it ties directly into to how training/handling/leadership/ and the dog’s perceptions of conflict all come together. Huge wake up call.

Something to consider regarding your p2 question: I don’t always have her phase 3 gear on, when she is only in her p2 gear she receives p2 corrections. The command structure and mechanics matches the highest levels of positive punishment she can receive through her gear, this way it is always predictable and makes sense to her. We definitely want her know what she wearing and what that means, and she does. If she is wearing no gear we revert to p1 command structure as she cannot receive positive punishment (we don’t use projectiles or spacial pressure etc) we set our expectations appropriately. Hope this makes sense.

Aren’t they amazing? We don’t use hand signals at all….I faded off of these years ago…I wasn’t even really sure what exact signal to use….Stormy remembered…or maybe she was looking at my whole body context…eyes….posture etc…they are masters of body language.

You can see that STorm thought “resistance” for a sec…Storm is in phase 3 and mostly off leash…..BUT I would say give it a whirl…I bet Senna knows what to do if you do light leash pumps…if he isn’t sure, he will guess….and I bet he guesses correctly. He is for sure not afraid to wing it and see if he got it right.

I like how the article talks about how we assume helplessness and have to learn how “escape” our conditions, this is why I thought escape conditioning. Then we are truly using operant conditioning definitively in that the dog is the “operator”. They are in control of the outcome of their behavior which is indeed empowering.

I didn’t even think of cold pavement and/or salt….it isn’t really a concern in Southern California! I love this group! That info is getting filed away…also, I am used to seeing dogs with super short nails, lots of clients with cement yards and pools…so that didn’t stand out to me. Thank you! @Mike

Jacob was being over fed so we made an adjustment there, afterwards no further adjustment was needed. He eats life’s abundance large breed. His training treats are stella and chewy meal mixer bites. They are soft and high value, super easy for him take, I started with them because he is not my dog, and I wanted to offer him something super yummy, then it stuck…I like giving him variety and it is easier to handle than little kibbles with his giant head, its also what I like to give my girls….so it was already on hand. Some of my clients train with the dog’s food…I usually let them decide….if I am honest I love to spoil the dogs and provide nutritional variety any possible way I can so I encourage people to use “wholer” food dog as training treats, if they can swing it and if they are interested in variety. Jacob usually eats his breakfast early, so we didn’t need to make adjustments here, unless I was going to pick him up earlier than normal, then he skips so I don’t have to worry about safety/digestion.

Much better response, yes, look at me prevents the dog from noticing.

I use look at me to help until heel is installed in phase 3. I don’t take dogs into environments beyond what my available motivators can work with, and I set the expectations accordingly. Hope this helps.
