Hi Marina,

    You’re in great company here!

Also Thank you for sharing your website on this platform, I visited it recently and I think its fantastic! well designed and constructed!

FYI I’m not APDT affiliated. But have friends and associates that are. My belief is…. to each their own.

I totally understand your obligation to self as to the “Why you have decided”. I sat on your question for a few hours before thinking of a way to word a shared understanding and also something to ponder…

so…. first up I going to say, just be honest and direct your attention and energy where your heart tells you. If you don’t feel comfortable in your heart with the APDT method or structure step away gracefully, or if you feel there may be some usefulness in the connection, happily remain.

Additionally I’ll be honest and hopefully this spurs discussion, personally I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

And I mean that with all due respect..although APDT policies and framework is what it is, there potentially are some likeminded trainers (that you may know) within the directory that want to see progressive movement within the dog training industry, and you never know these trainers may not even totally agree with APDT strategies or plan to get where they want to go. So I don’t believe remaining on their list of trainers is an absolute reflection of the alignment to their philosophy. You run a business, and it puts food on the table, networking as we know is essential.

Use the network, favourably to create discussion and to be a point of contact to those clients that do not have success with the “purely positive way”.

In terms of repercussions for leaving, I hope that gives food for thought.

The fact is, Dog training knowledge develops and as a result systems evolve. For instance K9-1 is on its 5th evolution and consistently seeks to challenge the assumption.

IMO the beauty of the FSDT system is that its adaptive and stylistic in form, while echoing the ethos of the standards the community formulates and at the same time applying consistent self analysis.

Technically, the concept doesn’t really diverge much from any other practises as a blueprint, holistically FSDT is as advanced as you make it (foundation is key), so really there is no ceiling and certainly no BS. Apologies, I don’t need to convince you of this. I’m just passionate about the methodology.

Again, you will have the full support of this community whatever decision you make regarding APDT and moving forward.

Happy training and all the very best

    Kim

I’m a fan of the concept of agency.

I believe, agency is the appropriate corridor dog trainers should lead their attention and efforts towards when formulating an ethics based modality for performance as well as decision making.

I agree…. landmarks for sure, because I think they will shape the general direction and as you often say will give us a “Compass”, even though the system complete is stylistically unique from trainer to trainer… the foundation is laid.

I 100% agree with the TRAMP concept, I have confidence a practitioner of FSDT at that level in consultation with the owners will undertake complete ownership and responsibility for that specific case, and will advise appropriately that any inherited/residual danger or risk absolutely needs mitigation.

The referral system or even referral portal would be a great place for those that are potentially needing additional advice.

I like the multiple choice assessment portal idea, covering a range of randomised questions targeting the minimum learning outcome for the unit. Reference material is super important to retain and refer to. I found the open ended question is great, very much like 2.0 when i went through, you and I skype’d, engaged in conversation and actually broke down the answer to question more so the reasoning rather than the conclusion.

Since 2016 undertaking studies through FSDT I have 3 massive binders and an external drive absolutely full of reference material, study material, blueprints, etc that i constantly refer back to.

I love video proficiency, however now i’m a fan of the unedited video proficiency. Where you are given a give a task or series of tasks to complete in order in 1 full setting.

obviously you train for the test and only hit record when you know the goal is achievable/finished. but for sure there is nothing wrong at all in showing the stages of training to get there! in fact it’ll probable be beneficial for peer review. intro, explain, demonstrate, execute. no editing.

I remember when I sent you media content to review in 2017, I for sure edited out poor reps, from both my timing and the dog losing interest because the training serial went too long. thinking about it now i should’ve been more open to review and analysis from others. The ethogy inst course i did requires this and i thought it was a great idea! there is no hiding everything is evaluated fairly.

I like your plans 1,2 & 3. I would be interested to know as the system evolves and is reviewed from 5.0>6.0…. and beyond would you be interested in a recertification process to verify evolutions in concept?

Nicely structured and a very comprehensive means to verify proficiency.

I definitely like the idea of having levels of proficiency.

In essence I very much like the martial arts system (I know you like The karate kid!) .

I feel like undertaking the ethical trainer certification you should have the ability to craft/formulate standardised (house breaking)training plans based on the knowledge of LIMA, ABA and dog behaviour. I’d say 1-3 potentially could merge into 1, and be deemed FSDT level 1.

With that said, FSDT level 2 incorporates assignment based technical plans as described in 4-5 that require behaviour shaping ( sit, down, come, place, heel) and or modification as well as video proficiency of a specific skilled routine which is where think most dog trainers will exist.

I know some trainers often specifically avoid training centring around aggression management and as a result not achieve FSDT status. Aggression rehabilitation and management should contain some amount of practical application, training plan timeline and have the ability to provide more than 1 course of action. i’d be very interested in how the verification process for management of aggression problems is addressed.

FDST level 3 would incorporate your ability to teach level 1 and 2’s as-well as take on advanced level training systems such as aggression (cert 6). I’d like to see something for board and train “trainers” out there like a kennel management plan assignment or protocol for operating under the guise of a FSDT within a business franchise. because this ties into having the capacity to conduct advanced level dog training and planning.as well as train the trainer application.

FSDT level 4 should be the top with technical branches off the tree such as protection, detection, comp obedience (PSA/GRC)

I really love the open dialogue that you promote Mike to push and evolve the craft, I’m just happy to be involved with the process and continually learn and impart onto others what ive learnt and continue to learn. The style of dog handler and trainer I share company with is IMO the most educated, adaptable and honest its ever been.

This may provide insight. honestly looks like they’re just satisfying innate behaviours, “it allows the animal to express species-specific behaviours” https://www.zoosnippets.com/post/the-contrafreeloading-concept-what-does-it-mean

    Hi Lauren,

to quote a French man and an Australian Criminal (Ned Kelly)….

“Such is life, that whatever is proposed, it is much easier to find reasons for rejecting than embracing.”

Stress definitely has the ability to make us default, in our attitude and behaviours. I see it everyday. Ive learnt..Teaching relies heavily on attitude, embracing the moments that test you as a teacher and finding a moment within that to realise perhaps I will first seek to understand then to be understood, enables a better analysis and often provides a clearer way forward.

Id say 100% from your dogs previous experience its behaviour justified the level of response from the description above.

Just remember from the operant conditioning cycle, your focus is on the behaviour not the individual.

Thank you for sharing you experiences and being honest and sincere.
